Local Art Walk

Madeline Jachim

Tap. Create. Express.

I am a tap dancer/tap teacher in the community. I live in Oceanside and teach at Carlsbad Dance Centre. My art is tap dancing and my mission is to communicate to my audience through rhythm and sound. Tap dance is a unique art because it is non-verbal yet can speak such important messages to the audience. Tap is its own language. It is intricate, rhythmic and compelling and I want to share this language with my community!

Allissa Thompson

Ansel Adams said, “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” As much as I love capturing beauty through the lens, it is the power of a photo to evoke feelings, share stories, and connect with people that is most meaningful to me. They say a picture is worth a thousand words; that's exactly what you'll get if you stop to chat with me about a photo. I love sharing the stories behind my photos and am truly honored when people ask about or enjoy them!

I was born and raised on a farm in Orange County, New York, but have called Oceanside home for the last five years. My creative passion was kindled long ago by a high school photography class, where I was educated in the fundamentals of lighting and composition, yet I subdued my artistic voice for years in favor of academic and athletic pursuits at Duke University. Returning to my artistic roots has given me wings along with insatiable wanderlust; my love of travel has taken me from the jungles of Thailand to the Australian Outback and the Great Wall of China. I still find endless beauty right here in Oceanside, and love the thrill of chasing my next shot. As a member of Carlsbad Oceanside Art League (COAL) and Oceanside Museum of Art's Artist Alliance, I enjoy sharing my work while learning from the many talented artists in our community.

Anne Hall

I am a local photographer that loves the beauty that Oceanside has to offer

I am retired and enjoying my passion of capturing those "special moments" I also travel so I have works from coast to coast but I tend to favor Ensenada and the Gaudalupe Valley with all of it's wonderful wineries.

Thomas Smith

Photography is an amazing process that allows me to capture one specific moment in time for eternity. Pictures can tell a story, or just show the beauty of the moment, or the horror. If I am lucky, I will capture some of those moments.

Dana Diane Patterson

I enjoy capturing not only the astonishingly beautiful physical world we inhabit, but digitally editing those images to share the mood that drew me to the scene. I love the color, movement, contrast, and fantasy elements of ordinary objects and telling a story with my artwork.

My childhood memories involve making a camera out of a shoebox and black electrical tape, wondering what my dad was up to in his closet darkroom, and driving into the desert at all hours of the morning or night to take photographs. I started taking digital photographs as references for all the paintings I wanted to make. I would never be able to paint them all or ever perfect my technique enough to do it, but thought I would share some of these images with everyone.

Alex Short

I'm Alex Short, and I play with a brilliant musician named Jon Jones. Together we go by AlexUSJones. We have been playing and gigging together for 6 months and are loving every minute!

Cory Whitlock

I am always looking to find ways to share my love of surfing and surfboard making. My father Rusty Whitlock has been a professional surfboard shaper since 1963. He taught me how to surf and I went on to have a professional surfing career in the 90's. My younger brother Ricky has also had a professional surfing career and is now moving toward big wave surfing. In 1997 to further spread our family's love of surfing we started "The Whitlock Surf Experience" a surfing school that is dedicated to bringing our love of surfing to as many people as possible. Every year we teach hundreds of families how to surf and show them the art of surfboard making.

Anne Fagan

Anne Fagan paints people caught in the act of being themselves. Her love of life is reflected in the relaxed calm and contentment of her guileless subjects: friends, family and random strangers who pique her interest. Simple, quirky, direct, with minimal background and a light palette, Anne’s paintings convey a mood as much as a story.

Much of Anne’s work derives from the sunny beach towns of North San Diego County where she grew up and still lives and paints. Her collection also includes subjects from her travels in Europe, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands.

Anne Fagan’s paintings are in private collections around the country.

Firelight Ladies

Amalia is originally from Chicago,IL and moved to beautiful Oceanside one year ago. Amalia brought with her a deep passion for flow art which is a type of interpretive dance using various props and dancing styles. It all started at a young age when she participated in many different forms of dance and baton twirling. Amalia got her hands on some fire poi when she was 18. After being active in the Chicago music scene she evolved into a fire performer by the time she was 21. Unlike many physical arts, learning flow arts (poi, fans, hoops) does not usually involve formal education. A strong sense of community and self-teaching are key elements of modern flow art. She found herself performing for music festivals and clubs in Chicago along the way she keeps adding to her list of props to dance with. Fire is the passion element and Amalia has a passion for dancing with fire. Being new to Southern California she is determined to start a fire flow performing group. She's currently reaching out to the San Diego flow community looking for others to perform with. During the the day you can find Amalia working at Apotheque spa where she does hair and teaches a fitness Hula-Hoop class in the spring and summer.

Be sure to visit Carley on the terrace at Oceanside Museum of Art and stay tuned for future projects! Past projects include: acrylic painting demonstration with fellow students; helping participants cut and design their own snow flakes using special wax paper; an art board for participants to creatively display their New Year’s resolutions; oil painting on mirror where participants took a selfie; creating a group mandala.

Rick Ortiz

I work at Biggs Harley-Davidson in San Marcos CA. I painted this piece simply named Semper Fi. Everyday we serve our Military Men and Women here at Biggs and every weekend they come in from there day of motorcycle riding and we serve them food, My family are very Military proud and it makes me feel good to see and serve these guys and girls, Basically because they get to see and do things us "normal" citizens do not, possibly even wouldn't/couldn't do. 2'x4' Acrylic on Wood panel. So I will be painting more Military related pieces in the Future.

Ruth Jameson

A lasting love affair with the images of Henry Moore, and Rodin are my guiding truth. Both sculptors had their own unique genre, and both were true unto their inner drummer.

Finding Bronze was my doorway to the visions always there in my heart. The strength of bronze gave birth to forms and connected them to the silver strands that drift down through time which become blended into my own visions of time and human awareness. The Sea is the underlying web that holds this world of desires together, and the bronze makes it possible.

The work is expressive and often collaborative; thus giving the opportunity of participation to people of diverse abilities. The greater body of work is in acrylics on various platforms, but includes creation in collage, mosaic, and mixed media.

Jeannie Marshall Ortiz

Jeannie Marshall Ortiz was born in San Diego, California, and grew up near the beach in south Ocean Beach. The ocean, the sun, and a good breeze have always been her comfort and inspiration. She gradually got into making art, starting with drawing, beading, sewing, and spinning and dying wool. She also played the flute, enjoyed jamming, and was part of a modern dance group called Vanguard. The rhythm and flow of all these elements is seen in her artwork.

She made her first linoleum block print when she was 21, living in what she called her ‘birdhouse’ in Golden Hills, while going to Mesa College. She majored in Art and Spanish, and took her first sculpting class there, which felt like coming home. Continuing her studies at San Francisco State University she enjoyed lithography, and, of course, sculpting. Finishing up her B.A. in Art with an emphasis in Sculpture, she made her first figurative sculpture in marble.

During her time in ‘The City’, she started traveling in Mexico and Guatemala, with just a backpack, and stayed in ‘pensiones’. Jeannie visited many museums and galleries, small towns, lots of water falls, made many friends, and drew in pencil and ink wherever she went. While living in Coatepec and Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, she worked on a sizable sculpture in marble, made a variety of prints, a couple of smaller sculptures in wood, and lots of drawings. She also taught art and sculpting to various individuals, and ceramics to a sizable group at the University Extension.

Returning to San Diego, Jeannie raised three sons, earned teaching credentials, and taught bilingual elementary school children for nearly two decades, mostly in Vista. She used her Spanish a whole lot more than her art during that time.

Since retiring, she’s gotten back to sculpting, and even made a couple of prints.
She teaches sculpting to kids of all ages, and now has a single subject credential to teach art. In 2010, Jeannie participated in the Oceanside Sculpture Competition. She taught sculpting at Reach, an after school program run by the Vista Community Clinic, with a grant from the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation in 2011. She was the featured artist of November 2011 at Vista Art Foundation’s Gallery 204. She teaches sculpting and mask making to elementary school students through ‘Kid’s College’, an after school enrichment program. She just learned to work in stained glass this winter, and loves the color and light. She also started making her first sculpture in olive wood recently. Jeannie shows her work at Artbeat on Main Street in Vista, and in the Artist Alliance shows around town.
